How to get to and around at the ICC2019

Below we explain a multitude of options to get to the ICC2019’s host city of Delft and the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). All locations (conference locations, airports, publics transport, hotels, parking and more), including additional information, can be found on our ICC2019 GoogleMap.

How to get to Delft by airplane (International + Europe)

There are multiple good options to come to by plane to the Netherlands. The most convenient options for Delft are via Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Rotterdam-The Hague Airport.

Landing at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

The best way to come by plane is flying to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AAS), with IATA airport code AMS, which is one of Europe’s major hubs and offers connections to major cities around the world and within Europe. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Skyteam partners can be a good option, as they offers direct flights from major cities within Europe and the rest of the word to AAS.

For more information about Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, please visit the AAS website.

For more information about flight to Amsterdam by KLM, please visit the KLM website.

Landing at Rotterdam-The Hague Airport

An alternative for some European guests can be Rotterdam-The Hague Airport (with IATA airport code RTM), which offers limited connections to European cities and is just 12-20 minutes by Taxi from the TU Delft. Please check the Rotterdam-The Hague Airport website for destinations and more information.

From Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Delft by train

The most convenient and affordable way is to go from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AAS) to Delft is by train. A train ride takes you within 40 minutes directly in to the city centre of Delft for €10.50 one way. Tickets can be purchased at the ticked machines (with English menu) or ‘Train tickets and service’ counter (for a small fee) at Schiphol Plaza. Please note that you need to scan your paper train ticket (which has an RFID chip) at the OV-poles in front of the escalators and lifts to the platform, before entering the platform and boarding a train. You will need to keep this ticket, to get out of the station in Delft by scanning your card at the gates. When you consider traveling more by public transport in the Netherlands, it can be worth to consider buying a OV-Chipkaart. For more information on this, please see the ‘Public transport in the Netherlands’ section.

When arriving in Delft, you are directly next to the Delft city centre. ICC2019 recommended hotels ‘Hotel De Plantaan’ and ‘Hotel Leeuwenburg’ are within walking distance from the train station. The ‘WestCord Hotel Delft’ can be reached by bus 55 or 63 to ‘IKEA Delft’ directly from the train station in 20 minutes. For more information on using public transport within Delft, please see the ‘getting around in Delft’ section.

From Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Delft by taxi

Another option is by Taxi, although we don’t recommend it as it often takes longer, depending on the time of day (35-60minutes), and can get quite expensive; a price for Schiphol to Delft is approximately €64 and can be up to over €100 depending on traffic. Please only take a taxi from the official Taxi station at Schiphol Plaza. Please do not accept offers from individuals who approach you outside of the official Taxi station, nor accept rides that do not depart from the official Taxi station (e.g. from a parking garage) as these drivers are likely not licenced and are not transparent on pricing.

For more information, please visit the Taxi page of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

How to get to Delft by international train (Europe)

There are multiple good options to come to Delft by train from Belgium, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, which can be even faster and more comfortable than by plane (when including to and from airport travel, checking-in and security). Also when booked early in advance, prices are competitive to travel by air and car. Via Germany and France, there are connections from other European cities to the Netherland, a.o. Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Austria, Poland, Luxemburg and the Czech Republic.

Ample payed parking is available in the large parking garages around the city centre and limited free parking at the TU Delft campus. Some of the recommended hotels, such as Hotel de Plantaan and WestCord Hotel Delft, offer parking on site. Please bear in mind that parking on the TU Delft campus is in high demand. It may therefore be difficult to find a parking space. You are advised to travel to the campus by bicycle or public transport if possible. The large on-campus car parks are well signposted on the campus ring road. There are several central car parks convenient for each building, but it is not possible to park right outside most buildings. You can walk from your parking space to your destination.

You will find six larger car parks on campus:

§  Aula building / Library (Van der Waalsweg) – Close to ICC2019, faculty of Industrial Design Engineering

Getting around in Delft

Walking

Walking around in the Delft city centre is an absolute joy, as you will be able to explore the beautiful historical streets, buildings and canals in the car free centre. Shops, restaurants and public transport are all in walking distance of the hotels in the city centre. Also walking towards the TU Delft campus from the city centre and train station will take you just 20 minutes. However, although you can get to all ICC2019 locations by foot, we recommend you take the Dutch approach by biking to all locations with the bikes we will provide you.

Bike

As you will notice, we Dutch love biking and is one of our major modes of transport. Biking in the Netherlands is very save, as dedicated infrastructure is in place and motorists are used to bikes. During the ICC2019 conference you can go fully Dutch as we will lent you a bike to get around. Please pick-up your bike at the ICC2019 reception on opening day.

Bus

There is a pretty good bus network in Delft. To plan your trip, we recommend you to use 9292. Busses towards the TU Delft campus depart from the south-entrance of the train station, close to the city centre. For the TU Delft 'Aula', please take bus 69. Bus 55 (direction 'Zoetermeer Centrum') and 63 (direction 'Delft Camping') pass stops close by the TU Delft campus.

For the 'WestCord hotel' at bus stop 'IKEA Delft', please take bus 61 or 63 (direction 'Delft Camping'). Bus 63 also stops at TU Delft campus, bus stop 'Stientjesweg'. From here it is a 10 min. walk to ICC2019

Please note that due to the demolition and reconstruction of the St. Sebastiaan bridge, connection between the Delft city centre and the TU Delft campus by car and bus has been rerouted and takes significantly longer.

Car

Coming to the ICC2019 by car is possible, but not recommended as parking at the TU Delft campus is limited and the Delft city centre is centre is not accessible for motorised vehicles, unless exempt. When visiting Delft city centre by car, please park your vehicle in one of the tree major garages outside of the city centre and make your last mile by foot. For more information on parking, please visit the official Parking in Delft website. If you really need to access the city centre by car, you can request an exempt here.

As said before, the parking on the TU Delft campus is in high demand. It may therefore be difficult to find a parking space. You are advised to travel to the campus by bicycle or public transport if possible. The large on-campus car parks are well signposted on the campus ring road. There are several central car parks convenient for each building, but it is not possible to park right next to most buildings. You can walk from your parking space to your destination.

You will find six larger car parks on campus:

§  Aula building / Library (Van der Waalsweg) – Close to ICC2019, faculty of Industrial Design Engineering

§  Faculty of 3mE (Leeghwaterstraat) – Close to ICC2019, faculty of Industrial Design Engineering

§  Faculty of EEMCS (Feldmannweg) – A 7 min. walk to ICC2019

§  Faculty of AE (Anthony Fokkerweg) – A 20 min. walk to ICC2019

§  Applied Sciences South (TNW Zuid) car park  – A 25 min. walk or 5 min. by bus 40 or 174 to ICC2019

§  Sports & Culture (Van Den Broekweg) – Currently closed as a parking garage is currently build here

Please note that due to the demolition and reconstruction of the St. Sebastiaan bridge, connection between the Delft city centre and the TU Delft campus by car and bus has been rerouted and takes significantly longer.

Public transport in the Netherlands

The Netherlands offers an extensive public transport network. All public transport in the Netherlands (except some ferries) can be used with an OV-chipcard. This can be an plastic RFID card (e.g. ‘anonymous OV-chipcard’) or a (one-way) paper RFID ticket, which function as your ticked and can be purchased at train stations at the ticket machines or online in advance.

Which ticked/card to buy

For just a single journey (e.g. from the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Delft), we recommend you to buy a single-way paper RFID card at a ticket machine. When you want to visit the Netherlands before or after the conference by public transport and/or want to travel with public transport within Delft, we highly recommend you to buy an ‘anonymous OV-chipcard’. Please note when buying an ‘anonymous OV-chipcard’, the card itself costs €7.50 and you will have to tap-on additional money which you can spend on public transport. To get an idea of the costs: the train from Schiphol to Delft is €10.50, travel by bus within Delft is €2.10 per trip. You can tap-on additional money at the ticket machines at the train station and OV-chipcard terminals at some supermarkets and newsagents.

§  at various supermarkets (such as AH and Jumbo)

§  at some Bruna shops

§  at a public transport company's counter (they might charge an extra fee)

Find a sales point nearby here. At Amsterdam Schiphol Airport you can buy an ‘anonymous OV-chipcard’ at the NS ticketmachines at Schiphol Plaza, above the train platforms, the AKO news agent store at Schiphol Plaza or the NS ticket counters (Dutch railway) at Schiphol plaza.

How to use in trains and metro

When using trains and metros in the Netherlands, you will have to pass OV-gates before going to the platform or you have to scan your card at a OV-pole. Please have your card ready when walking towards the gate or pole, to ensure a good flow of traffic. Have your OV-chipcard scanned at the gate or pole, after which they will give a signal and in the case of the gate open. If you cannot pass, the screen at the gate will inform on what is the issue (e.g. low balance on the card). If you need assistance, you can make use of the service and information poles. Please don’t forget to have your card scanned again at an OV-gate or OV-pole, before exiting the platform to prevent a €20 fine.
